I read something in what I'll call another forum and I found it somewhat disconcerting. Not the words themselves but the unintended meaning behind them. It was about our current Presidential election and how we just need to accept the results of the election and not hate the other guy's vote. I agree with the hate part, people of goodwill can disagree and remain respectful and friends. When the political system functions correctly that's what happens. But it's not about simply accepting something as though it doesn't matter. By the very meaning of the word every election is about change. Every election matters. The National Review has brought together multiple conservative writers in an issue of Bill Buckley's magazine to launch a mega attack on Republican frontrunner Donald Trump. The crux being that they believe he is not a conservative. Says who? Them? Who gets to determine what someone's political ideology is at any given time. By today's standards adhered to by the extreme forces which are dominant in the so called conservative movement would reject many of that modern movements iconic figures including Bill Buckley. When Buckley changed his mind on the Iraq War and came out against it he was villified by those strident voices. I hate the month of January, always have and see nothing which could change my mind. While many see the ringing in of the New Year as a time of renewal and a time to set new goals, I see at as the bitter cold of nothingness, both figuratively and literally. On a brighter note, this past Saturday the first day of the implementation of the Iran Nuclear Deal officially began. On that day five American prisoners held in Iran were freed. Four of them were in exchange for seven Iranian prisoners held by our country on various charges, none of which were terror related but that didn't stop  President Obama's critics from complaining about it. I doubt the freed Americans care and I certainly don't. It was offers of good will on both sides. Presidential candidate Chris Christie said if you're a pot smoker in Colorado enjoy it while you can because as of January, 2017 when he's President, Federal law will be enforced. This leads to two points for consideration. The first is that Federal law still prohibits the legal use of marijuana. Those engaged in these legal businesses worry about this issue. For now the Feds have taken a hands off approach. The second point goes directly to one of the alleged conservative cornerstones and that is States rights issues. How does Christie square this? For over twenty years I have advocated that marijuana use should be at a minimum decriminalized at all levels. Our prisons are overloaded with pot users that frankly shouldn't be there. I have now come to the conclusion it should be legalized and taxed across the board. There is zero evidence that those who don't use marijuana will suddenly take to it if it's legal.
